Maca
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable from the Peruvian Andes, related to radish. It is dried and ground into a powder with a malty, nutty taste, or put into capsules.
Labels name the colour of the root (yellow, red or black) and whether the maca is raw or gelatinised: gelatinised maca has been heated so that its starch breaks down, and it stirs more easily into drinks. Extracts state a ratio such as 10:1, meaning ten parts of root for one part of extract.
Compare the grams of root per daily dose (for an extract, its ratio) and the price per 100 g.
FAQ
What is gelatinised maca?
Maca heated to break down its starch. It is a processing step, not added gelatine, so it can still be vegan.
Yellow, red or black maca?
Different colours of the same root. The label names the colour; yellow is the most common.
Powder or capsules?
Powder is cheaper and mixes into smoothies or porridge; capsules are pre-dosed and have no taste.
