Digestion & probiotics
This section holds bacterial culture products, digestive enzymes, lactase, fibres such as psyllium, and plant extracts. Culture products differ in their strains (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces boulardii) and the number of live bacteria (CFU).
Lactase has an EU-authorised claim: it improves lactose digestion in people who have difficulty digesting lactose, at 4500 FCC units with each lactose-containing meal. Bacterial cultures have no authorised claims, so we compare strains and CFU.
FAQ
What is CFU?
Colony-forming units: the number of live bacteria per serving, shown on the product page.
Do bacterial cultures need the fridge?
Some do, some keep at room temperature; the pack gives the storage conditions.
When should lactase be taken?
At the start of each meal containing lactose; the claim's condition is 4500 FCC units.
